Creating solutions for the West African housing and construction industry
Senegal’s urban population is growing so rapidly that it is predicted to increase from 42.5 percent, measured in 2011, to 61.4 percent in 2050. 130 100 inhabitants are moving to Senegal’s capital city, Dakar, every year.
Due to this swift increase in the urban population, the need for housing and other supporting infrastructure is a major necessity in Senegal and takes precedence in order to maintain a quality of life amongst city dwellers. The Senegalese government has created strategies to solve these challenges and looks to increase access to housing, reduce the cost of rent, decrease the cost of building materials and redesign the legal and regulatory framework to better support real estate development. Not only do they want to solve these issues, but they also want to do it in an environmentally friendly way adopting a “Green Cities for Employment” program in an attempt to make the cities more attractive thereby developing their economic potential.
By training more specialised workers and encouraging sub-region construction company start-ups, the Senegalese government aims to build 15 000 houses a year.
Organised by the Ministry of Urban Renewal, Housing and Living Environment in partnership with AME Trade Ltd, SEN HABITAT, the 2nd International Housing, Building and Construction Exhibition and Conference will focus on these crucial challenges facing the West African building industry and give companies the chance to identify opportunities by promoting their products and services to a large, targeted audience.
Last year’s event attracted more than 1700 participants, 59 exhibitors and 13 international sponsors and partners, gathering people from over 16 countries. This included policy makers, investors, industry experts, development partners and other housing and construction stakeholders.
