Nigeria´s Construction Outlook
Nigeria is Africa’s economic powerhouse. In 2014, its GDP reached US$ 546 billion and it has recently overtaken South Africa as the largest economy in Africa. The construction industry is currently worth around US$ 69bn and employs 5% of Nigeria’s 170m population. Along with a growing economy, new government policies and an expanding middle class this has led to massive investments in the industry.
Currently in its infant stage the market remains relatively unsaturated by international suppliers and despite the push for the full spectrum of infrastructure, commercial, industrial and residential structures there is a lack of local machinery and equipment to meet demand, providing significant opportunities for international suppliers looking to corner the market.
Nigeria in figures
- The 7th most populous country in the world
- The largest economy in Africa
- Growth projected to be the highest globally by 2018
- Expected to become one of the world‘s top 20 economies by 2050
- Construction industry worth US$ 69bn
- Construction industry has averaged 9.5% growth in the last 5 years
- Imports increased from US$ 32 billion in 2009 to US$ 55 billion in 2014 (+72%)
